With storms currently sweeping over the country and racing for the first day of Cowes Week 2019 disrupted with an abandonment already in place, competitors and visitors are spending a day embracing Island life.

In keeping with Sustainability Day, sustainability-themed events are taking place throughout the day in Cowes. Cowes Week Ltd, whose mission is to continue to make the event more sustainable, has been rewarded with a silver certificate in the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas Programme.

One of the key decisions the organisers took this year was not to provide plastic bow stickers or boat decals. Also no wristbands will be issued, t but instead competitors are able to use a code in the event App to access a range of competitor specific benefits including offers and discounts.

CWL’s mission is also to encourage all competitors to avoid single-use plastic and instead use refillable water bottles. Also aql, official communications sponsor here at Cowes Week, has installed water sensors on the Sunsail funded water fountains around Cowes in order to monitor the usage throughout the week.

The Land Rover UK Sailor Breakfasts that gives competitors a chance to grab a coffee and bacon roll on the go, are today extending their morning opening hours at the airstream pod in the Yacht Haven. 

Elsewhere in Cowes on this opening day there is plenty of entertainment lined up including live bands around town including Cowes Parade, Shepards Marina and Cowes Yacht Haven. Head to Shepards Marina at 1800 for a sundown session in association with Westerhall. 

The Westerhall Caribbean party on Cowes Parade is also one not to miss. The event starts at 1800 and gives visitors a chance to benefit from discounted jugs of Dark N Stormy and see Britian's Got Talent star Derek Sandy and the Reggae Source in action. There will also be opportunities to bag a prize. Catch one of the lucky balls for your chance of winning.

For something different why not head to Northwood House for an afternoon tea, or enjoy a glass of gin at the Gin Festival. The evening entertainment starts at 2000 with Juicebox. 

Weather outlook for Sunday

The wind will moderate slowly overnight, to 18-25 knots by Sunday morning, though with stronger gusts. Beyond that, the breeze will moderate further, to 8-14 knots on Monday, before increasing to 16-24 in a weaker low pressure system mid-week. Outside of isolated sharp showers very little rain is expected and Cowes is currently bathed in sun.
