Competitors at Lendy Cowes Week woke up to slightly cooler conditions this morning and, with a fresh breeze filling in from the south-west, the chances of a good day of sailing on Youth Day at Lendy Cowes Week, are high.

As the regatta reaches its halfway stage, competition across the board is beginning to intensify. Some of the closest competition is, as always, within the youth classes and, with individual trophies including the Land Rover Under 25 Trophy and the Musto Young Skipper’s Trophy up for grabs, there is likely to be more intense racing today.

Weather

This morning will see a change in the weather to a south-westerly airflow that will feel cooler than the heat wave of the last week.

The thin early morning cloud will break up and clear away by lunchtime giving an afternoon of bright sun with a slim chance of an isolated shower.

A west or west south-westerly breeze of 8-12 knots this morning will back towards the south-west and increase to 12-16 knots by early afternoon, with possible gusts to 18-20 knots.

Courses

Racing is expected to get away on schedule, with the bulk of the White Group day boats starting on the Bramble line, heading towards the west before finishing on the Royal Yacht Squadron line. This will be a classic Lendy Cowes Week finish, with the boats close inshore off the Green under spinnaker.

Most of the Black Group yachts will start on the Royal Yacht Squadron Line, heading east under spinnaker, before returning to finish on the new Breakwater Line that can be seen from the Parade. Their first start will be at 1010 for the biggest yachts in IRC Class 0 and IRC Class Super Zero that are competing for the Triple Crown over the next three days.

Activities

Around town, visitors to Lendy Cowes Week can expect a full day of activities starting at 1100 with the 1851 Trust Treasure Hunt based along Cowes Parade. At 1115 is the first of two 1851 Trust Workshops with today’s theme: Fit for the Future.

Cowes Yacht Haven, Shepards Marina and Northwood House also have a packed schedule of activities including (at Northwood House) a Classic Car Display, and, for when the sun appears later today, Afternoon Teas on the Eastern Lawn.

The Lendy New Generation Music Stage on Cowes Parade has a fantastic line-up of artists for today including the Tarot Rats at 1400, Leithbridge Owen at 1500, and Theia at 1610. The music continues all day with the final act – Oomphf – kicking off at 2100.
