Quotes from a selection of competitors from today’s racing

Jon Powell, J/80, Betty

“Having led the race and maintained the lead when the wind from the north dropped out and then came in from the south, when we were on a tight spinnaker reach, I managed to hit the mark. It was quite impressive because I managed to hit it with the tide pulling us off. Not sure how that happened. I did some turns but then realised we had to take a penalty so, even though we crossed the line in first place, we ended up second.

“Generally though I am very pleased with our boat speed this week, we seem to be really flying and I put that down to my super-hot crew, in particular John Lawrence who is doing a good job of navigating.”

Harry Heijst, Class 5, Winsome

“It was our day today. And I have to say that you only win a race when you have a fair share of luck. We actually started with two boats ahead of us but on the long beat from east to west we picked up a good breeze. Our boat goes well in those conditions. Our strategy really was to stay out the strong tide as much as possible and that really seemed to pay off.”

Giovanni Belgrano, Class 6, Whooper

“We drove her like we stole her! And they didn’t catch us. It was a fantastic day of racing. We pushed her hard all the way, had some big opportunities and consequently made some big gains. We also kept in the shallows where we could.”
