Winners’ quotes of the day

Quotes from a selection of winners from today’s racing

Amanda Marino, ELEMIS Ladies Day Ariel Trophy winner, Half Tonner, Chimp

“Absolutely delighted. We really didn’t expect that because there are some really competent ladies on the racecourse, so we are quite taken aback.

“We sailed well as a team and it was good conditions for the boat, she likes a breeze, so as the breeze picked up, the boat took off. I think one of the keys today was good teamwork. We had the core girl crew onboard with a couple of chaps to fill the spots but we sailed a tactically good race. The last downwind leg we got right out into the deep water and came down with pressure too. The girls have all had a past in sailing and experienced and our motto is to go sailing and have fun, and that is exactly what we do.”

Freddie Peters (14), Elite, Riff Raff

“We had another great race today. We were lying second on the second downwind leg of the sausage but we spotted a handy shift on the right-hand side of the course and, with spot on crew work, we pulled off a good gybe set. This was the turning point in the race because from there on we were able to pull away and retain our lead to the finish.”

Sam Cox, Class 1, King 40, Nifty

“It was another fantastic day on the racecourse but winning is not as easy as it sounds mainly because we have four boats in particular including Erivale II, Cobra, us and Zero II, racing almost on a level rating basis. It has been really tight and tough racing but thankfully we’ve had some really courses too.

“Because we are so closely rated getting the edge over the others is tricky but today I think it was all about reading the tides, and calling the laylines correctly. We got one or two of those right and we found ourselves leading at the windward mark.”
