“We had a good start and led at the first mark, but Graham Bailey on Aimee managed to gybe and slip through on the inside track at the second mark. We actually went round that mark in third. However, the two boats ahead did a massive bear away for another mark. We were sure we had the right course and carried and gained a good lead. Basically today was all about consistency and teamwork. I think having just completed a really windy world championship in Cascais helped us a lot because we were thoroughly tuned up for today’s conditions.”

“Having won the race by 15 minutes yesterday, we were a bit slow off the mark today and took a while to get through. At the end of the first run we were still surrounded by classes we should have been ahead of. We were lying about seventh at that point. From there on we worked hard on speed upwind and used the tide to our advantage. On the third beat we crossed the tide to Ryde Bank into shallow water and worked the shifts. This I believe was the key to our success today.”
Steve Warren-Smith, Squib, Aquabat
“Fantastic racing and a wonderful contrast to yesterday in rain and little wind. It was a well-laid course and we had nearly three hours of enjoyable racing. We have however, just declared a penalty which was a port/starboard incident off The Green, but with our reckoning, we have still managed to retain our top result. I think that the key to our win today was working hard upwind, and keeping out of the strong tide. Thankfully we’d read the book Winning Tides, which really helped today.”
