Steve Thomas, skipper, Tranwall (M32) Artemis Challenge

“It was awesome. Mosly 15-20kts of wind from the due west. Not the perfect angle for us to get around but a relatively quick ride for us.

“Phaedo started just behind us but it didn’t take long at all before they blasted through us. Our peak target was to get round in under four hours and also have a shot at the under 40ft record set by an Extreme 40. We almost missed the finish line, we went the wrong side but we corrected ourselves.

“That is my second time around, so I kind of knew what to expect round the back of the island. I was pleasantly surprised that the boat handled the conditions really well and didn’t slow us down at all. We learnt a lot about the boat and I think we’ll have a good crack at the record next year.”

Kim Slater, XOD, today’s class winner, Madeleine

“Very pleased with our first place today. It was a tough one and, to beat Jeremy [Lear] in Lass, the current overall leader, is a real bonus.

“Sailing a good beat in the foul tide was is really important. The aim, as always, is to get in the leading group as soon as possible. The crucial point is then choosing the exact right time to tack out to the mark, which happened to be East Lepe. We managed to get it right and led at that first mark. Our aim this week is finish overall in the top 10.”

Rebecca Buchanan, pit/navigator, Cruiser Div B, today’s class winner Haggis 2 (Mustang 30)

“We had just the most fantastic day because we had a good start and made some good tactical decisions that paid off, unlike yesterday when everything we did went wrong. We are so delighted.

“Today was all about getting a good start in order to inch ahead for clear air. The team sailed really well and we led at the first mark. We were  overtaken by the overall leader – Sheevra – at the fourth mark [East Bramble] but after a good beat, keeping inshore out the tide, we regained control. We also had some gear failure we had to deal with. The coating on the Dyneema jib halyard sheered off and it wouldn’t hold in the clutch, so on the last run we had to re-run a new halyard, which was an interesting thing to be doing on the approach to the finish.”
