Rain overnight and an overcast sky has done nothing to dampen the spirits of the hoards of families here to embrace Family Day. The wind has also freshened up which bodes well for an exciting day on the water for Day 2 of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.
Competitors preparing to head out on the water can expect a brisk west-southwest breeze of 18-20 knots at breakfast time. Although the morning dawned overcast, a sunny afternoon is forecast after a very weak cold front passes over the race area around midday. Once temperatures rise in the sun the breeze could be strengthened further by thermal enhancement.
White Group dayboat classes starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron line will be heading east to race in the more sheltered waters of the eastern Solent before finishing on the Shrape line off East Cowes.
Black Group yachts starting from the Bramble line will head west before returning to finish from the west on the RYS line. The XOD class will start from the Bramble line at 1245, heading east, before joining the rest of White Group fleets in finishing on the Shrape line.
To celebrate Family Day there is a host of family-themed activities happening around town all day including a special visit by the Swallows & Amazons film team, including Nick Barton, the producer of the modern adaption of Arthur Ransome’s much-loved novel. The boat used in the film will also be on display on Cowes Parade.
