All classes have now started on the final day of this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. It’s a dry and bright day, with a light north westerly breeze, giving civilised racing conditions. However, the pleasant weather belies the intensity of the competition that’s happening afloat – for most of the White Group day boats the results of today’s race will determine their overall results for the regatta as a whole.
The first finishers were the yachts in IRC Classes 4 and 5, on a shortened course. The remainder are expected to reach the Royal Yacht Squadron line from around 1300 onwards, with Black Group yachts reaching across the building west-going tide to finish on the outer end of the line. There will also be classic Cowes Week spinnaker finishes along the Green for White Group classes, starting with the Etchells a little after 1300, with competitors as close to the beach as they dare to gain relief from the adverse tide.
