Yasmin Haire's winning photo in the "on water" category

Yasmin Haire, Peter Rivron and James Tomlinson are the first winners of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Photography competition.  The competition was created as an incentive for budding photographers amongst the spectators at Cowes Week to upload and share their daily photos in one place on the event website; a feature funded by Aberdeen Asset Management.

The winner of each category has been awarded with a £250 photography equipment voucher, and the winner of the ‘on-water’ and ‘shore-side’ categories will be given the opportunity to shadow a professional photographer at next year’s regatta.

The challenge for this year’s competition was to capture ‘the spirit of the regatta’. Double Olympic gold medallist, Shirley Robertson, was joined by representatives from Aberdeen Asset Management, Getty Images and Cowes Week Limited in judging the competition entries. The judging was no easy task as the three categories: on-water racing action, shore side experience and Under 18, generated over 1,250 photo entries into the competition.

The ‘on-water’ category was won by Yasmin Haire. Yasmin said: “I really enjoyed the week and it was a fantastic opportunity to be a part of the competition!

Peter Rivron from Newport on the Isle of Wight, the winner of the ‘shore-side’ category, said: “I am really thrilled and so pleased to have won first prize in the Aberdeen Asset Management photo competition. Judging by the amount of entries it was a very popular event, I am very proud to have won. I am really looking forward to spending time with a shore side professional photographer next year.” The runner up for this category was Alex Irwin, who has been awarded Gill sailing kit.

With more entries than expected, the Under 18’s category was particularly difficult to judge. James Tomlinson from Cowes was the chosen winner, with his photo of the start of the SB20 class.

Aberdeen Asset Management will once again be holding the photography competition at Cowes Week 2014. Jill Maxwell, Sponsorship and Events Manager at Aberdeen Asset Management, said: “We are thrilled that the photography competition was such a success this year. This inclusive competition has helped to promote creativity both on and off the water, enhancing the experience of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week amongst competitors and spectators alike. We hope that next year’s competition will grow and be as successful as this year.”
