Winners’ quotes from the final day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2013
White Group overall winner
Squib, Lady Penelope, SQ819
Malcolm Hutchings and Andy Ramsey from Burnham-on-Crouch won their class with a day to spare, and a final win today was enough to clinch an overall White Group win.
Malcolm Hutchings
“We are overwhelmed. It is fantastic to have finally won White Group after three years of trying and we are particularly pleased to be taking the trophy back to the east coast.”
Dragon, Aimee GBR720,
Graham Bailey, Julia Bailey, Will Herritage, Dillon Potter/Richard Power notched up an impressive scoreline of five first places to win their fleet with a day to spare. However, to stay in with a chance of winning White Group Team Aimee had to ensure they won again today. But still, nothing was certain until nearest rival – Squib Lady Penelope – had won her race, and a square root formula applied to the overall score.
Graham Bailey, helmsman,
“We failed to win White Group overall because of this factor. We have won it before however, twice, and Black Group once, so we are pleased it went to a good fleet.
“We had great day’s racing and we know we couldn’t have done any better than we did with a total of six first places.
I told Stuart Quarrie before the week started it wouldn’t be possible for a Dragon to win White Group because the factor is too big, so in one way I am pleased I won’t have to swallow my words.”
“To win White Group is a huge thing. It’s about being able to nail your races one by one. Each of the winners of White and Black Group will have won their class with one or two days to spare, but to have a Group win you need to keep up the pressure right until the end of the regatta. We didn’t need to sail today because we’d won our class but we had to try and win another race, so it keeps it really interesting, and I love that format. It is a fantastic challenge.”
Daring, Dauntless DAK3,
Giles Peckham, Milo Carver and Richard Romer-Lee were lying in second place to Decoy going into today’s final race, but a dream finish with a win for Team Dauntless, and a third for Decoy (Andrew Norton, Richard Ottaway, David Chaplin, Julian Goodwin and Michael Holland) gave them an overall win. Peckham and team have now won this regatta 10 years in succession except one year when they were boatless.
Giles Peckham
“We had an OCS earlier in the week which was not ideal so we were hoping the race would run today to ensure the discard kicked in. As it happened the wind filled in to about Force 3 and we had a cracking race. We managed to take advantage of an eddy as we headed up The Green and squeezed ahead and extend our lead from there.”
