Competitors racing the final day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week are preparing for lighter winds today. There is currently a general postponement in place in the hope of a breeze to fill in sufficiently for racing to commence.
With the Black Group overall winner having been decided yesterday, the White Group classes racing today are racing for their overall trophy, and the majority of the Black Group classes will be racing for individual club trophies.
In White Group racing continues to be extremely close for the overall White Group Trophy, with the east coast Squib, Lady Penelope, sailed by Malcolm Hutchings and Andy Ramsey currently leading the fleet. However, there is still everything to play for with Graham Bailey and team on Aimee the Dragon, potential winners when the discard comes into play after today’s race.
An exciting addition to the week, is the introduction of the final Saturday taster day, which is aimed at those who have boats rated under the Island Sailing Club Rating System (ISCRS) and who want to race but are daunted by the idea facing so many boats in the main event.
The newcomer day, which cost just £30 to enter was well subscribed and a fleet of 35 boats are preparing to start, once the wind fills in.
Sailing Today magazine has also presented a new trophy, specifically for today’s taster event. This, and another new trophy – the Newcomer Trophy – presented by local letterbox to the best placed newcomer (owner), will be awarded at this evening’s main prizegiving event, which takes place at the Events Centre, Cowes Yacht Haven from 1900.
