The penultimate day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is likely to produce another great day’s sailingwith plenty of sun and winds of around 8-15 knots from the south-west.
After a weak front passed across The Solent at breakfast time, the wind veered into the west. As the day heats up some thermal enhancement will cause the breeze to swing towards the west-south-west, particularly in the western Solent. However, by this time the gradient wind will be around 290 degrees and oscillations of up to 40 degrees are possible, making it a tricky day for course setters.
White Group classes, including Swallows and Sunbeams, are starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron line and will head to the east and finish on the Shrape line from the east.
The XOD committee boat will be in the in the vicinity of Browndown, with racing taking place in the eastern Solent, before finishing on the Shrape line with the remainder of the White Group classes.
Black Group yachts starting on the Bramble line will start to the west, with the smaller boats returning to the Knoll Bank after their first windward leg and then finishing on the Bramble line from the east.
The bigger boats will stay in the western Solent, where they will be joined by the classes starting on the Black Group committee boat line, near Goodacre Yacht Repairs, close to the north shore of the eastern Solent. These classes will all finish on the RYS line from the west, in a classic Cowes Week finish close to the shore – even for the largest yachts – under spinnaker.
