IRC Class 2
Frank Gerber tactician aboard Tonnerre de Breskens 3 winner of the Vanuara Bowl
“It was more a navigators race rather than a tacticians race today so my job was to make sure we didn’t get into too much trouble. We saw about 20kts maximum and it was very consistent which is unusual with that direction. There was only about 15-20 degrees variation in direction. It made the planning of the legs fairly easy. We did however, have a few moments, one in particular when we converged on East Bramble with the XODs, which was interesting but thankfully managed to come out unscathed. The crew did a good job, so we’re hoping for more of the same tomorrow.”
J/80
Chris Taylor helmsman aboard J. A. T.
Chris Taylor from Hayling Island SC is sailing with a team of young dinghy sailors all under 21 years old. They finished fourth two years ago at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and are looking forward to repeating their performance tomorrow.
“It was good for us today because we had such a solid breeze and we tend to go quick in those conditions. Pleased with our result and really looking forward to tomorrow because it looks like there’ll be good wind again.”
Sportsboat
Jon Powell, helmsman aboard Betty
Jon Powell and his five-strong team on Betty, the 707, are regulars at the front of the 707 fleet. They recently won the 707 national championship. This week they are racing in the mixed Sportsboat class.
“We had a great race. It was a bit tough because the wind was full on the whole day and we had wind against tide some of the time so it was fairly challenging. However, my super-hot crew navigated me round the course well and, as always, put in a great performance. We are looking for more good breezes tomorrow so we can hopefully do well again and enjoy another exciting race.”
