Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week provides the perfect opportunity to embrace family sailing. Competing with family members is so popular at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, a special day was introduced to the regatta several years ago.
Family Day takes place tomorrow and one team keen to head back on the water again after today’s positive start where they crossed the line first in the opening race, is the Jaques family sailing their J/70 – Django.
This team, led by father Malcolm, is made up entirely by family members, including daughter Naomi Rowbotham, son Tristan, and partner Nix Brook. They also posses some fine credentials between them with father, Malcolm having sailed in 1979 12M world championship on Lionheart, and in the 1980 America's Cup.
Son Tristan is a former 29er and Class 40 world champion, and holds the speed record for 40 footers in the round Britain and Ireland race. Daughter/sister Naomi is the long-suffering crew member for Malcolm and Tristan, as is Nix, former dinghy racing Wilson Trophy team member.
Chatting after today’s opening race where the team showed their true potential, Malcolm Jaques commented: “The conditions are perfect for J/70s. They fly downwind and most of all they are good fun which is what racing is all about.”
