Torrential rain overnight has cleared the air to make way for a slightly cooler, yet invitingly-fresh sailing conditions for the opening day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2013.
The forecast is for a warm and clear day with a classic steady south-westerly airflow of 16-20 knots in the western Solent, with the breeze likely to be a little less strong and slightly veered towards the west-north-west in the eastern Solent. Large windshifts and gusts to around 25 knots will be experienced at the edge of any clouds that pass overhead, making for exciting and tactical racing.
Black Group is racing in the western Solent today with starts from the Bramble Start Line and from a committee boat. The Multihull fleet is first off at 1030 from the Bramble Line, and the finish of Black Group will be a classic downwind finish from the west.
White Group starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line at 1000 with the J/70s, and the SB20s 10 minutes later. Starts will then take place in five-minute intervals.
White Group finish is on the Shrape line, except for the J/70s and SB20s which will finish, and start its second race at Meon. Their second race will finish on the Shrape line.
