09:00 Wednesday 30 Jan 2013 Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy extended to support 15 crews in 2013

Building on the success of the first Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy in 2012, Aberdeen is delighted to announce the extension of the opportunity to more young teams at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week in 2013.

Having funded the participation of 10 crews in the regatta in 2012, Aberdeen’s support of the youth sailing initiative is being increased to 15 crews in 2013. The first 15 crews to enter the event and confirm their entire team of under 25 year olds will have their entry fees covered by Aberdeen, as well as receiving team sailing kit and having the chance to compete for the stunning Under 25 Trophy.

Douglas Connon, Head of Corporate Events at Aberdeen Asset Management, said: We are pleased to announce that after the success of the inaugural Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy, this year we will be increasing our support to the first 15 youth crews to enter the regatta. By providing financial assistance through this initiative, we hope to enable even more young crews to enter the event and take part in competitive sailing.”

Sailors William Goldsmith (19), Ben Arnold (20), Mark Wild (22) and Julian Wild (22) from Essex, racing in the J/80, Exess, became the first crew to win the Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy at last year’s event.

Exess had a fantastic week of sailing at Cowes, collecting 2nd place in the J/80 class behind RAFBF Spitfire. Exess skipper, William Goldsmith, said: “2012 was the best Cowes Week yet and we were thrilled to be the first winners of the Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 Trophy and take the beautiful silverware home with us. It’s great to hear that Aberdeen will be funding the participation of even more young crews this year, unfortunately we can’t attend to defend our title this summer, but we will be back in the future!”

Stuart Quarrie, CEO of Cowes Week Limited (CWL) added: “It is fantastic that Aberdeen Asset Management is extending its support for young sailors at the regatta. Last year was a great success so it’s brilliant that even more crews will benefit from this initiative in 2013.”
