J/80
Jon Powell and his team from Warsash scored their second win of the week today aboard Betty in the J/80 class. Commenting on the team’s win, Powell said:
“It was really shifty out there today, and it was particularly noticeable on our course because we were sent on a zig zag course to Norris where the wind was all over the place. We had a moderate start but managed to take the lead a quarter of the way up the first leg. Once ahead it was a case of not just playing the shifts well, but also being fairly conservative and taking a few knocks now and again.”
IRC Class 2
Adam Gosling and team on his Corby 36 Yes, which won Black Group overall last year was on form again today with a win in Class 2. Sailing on the smallest boat in the fleet Gosling said it is challenging but exceptionally good competition.
“The conditions and the course were perfect for us today and the team worked hard in the shifty conditions to achieve our top result.”
Commenting on any changes his made to the boat since last year, Gosling added: “Nothing much at all. The only thing is a new headsail, plus we have a couple of new faces on the boat.”
First 40
Andrew McIrvine and team in the 10-strong First 40 class, racing within IRC Class 2, sailed well today to take their first class win of the week. McIrvine commented:
“It was perfect Champagne sailing today on a good course with long beats against the tide and fast runs with the tide. There were also some key tactical decisions to be made that worked well for us. Generally, the team sailed well and worked hard on the long beat, short tacking up the mainland shore which paid dividends.”
