A busy day is expected at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week today because not only is it Ladies Day but it is also the Artemis Challenge.
Among the many activities planned for this special day are spot prizes on the racecourse for ladies including Elemis and Gill products, and waterproof mobile phone covers.
One of the main events of Ladies Day is this evening’s presentation of the Ladies Day Trophy awarded for outstanding commitment or achievement of women in sailing.
Lack of wind however, this morning means a there has been a change of plan for the Artemis Challenge for IMOCA 60 fleet’s 50-mile sprint round the Isle of Wight. Instead, this fleet will sail a shortened course on the eastern Solent towards Nab Tower, while two Artemis Challenge multihulls head off around the Island.
Included in the crew of the multihulls are – Oman Air-Musandam – Paul Goodison, celebrated solo yachtswoman Dee Caffari, and female Omani offshore sailor Raya Al Habsi. Seb Josse will be at the helm of Gitana.
Caffari chatting before she headed out on the water this morning, said: “The Artemis Challenge is always exciting because there are many spectacular boats taking part for all to see, including round the world race boats. And, of course, having the event happening on Ladies Day is even more special.
“It is great to see so many women celebrities taking part too including Olympic sailors, actresses, and a good French contingent.
“As far as the racing goes, the situation doesn’t look so good, although it seems the two multihulls are still going around the Isle of Wight.”
The Artemis Challenge Trophy, regardless of whether the around the Isle of Wight course is set, will be awarded to the winning team with the best added elapsed time. Each team – A and B – is made up of IMOCA 60s and multihulls and the winning team (four boats) will receive £5,000 (£1,250 each boat) donated by Artemis Investment Management for the teams’ charities of choice. £2,500 will also be donated to the winner of each team (Multihull and IMOCA 60).
Elsewhere racing will take place as soon as the breeze settles but probably not until 1230.
