Etchells, Stampede, GBR1329
Rob Goddard and team started the week with some good results including a second in race one, and a win today.
“The key for us today was good navigation and team work in the difficult conditions. We led at the start but got caught in a wind hole at Norris while those offshore picked up a good breeze. However, we crept up the fleet to fourth and watched the first three boats round a mark the wrong way and we were able to monopolise on their mistake. It wasn’t as windy as we thought it was going to be but we did get 16kts at one point.”
Quarter Ton, Whiskers, GBR902R
Liz Rushall and team on 34 year-old Quarter Tonner led today’s race from start to finish.
“It was a dream race for us because we led off the line. My super hot crew believed it would pay to be at the committee boat end of the line and they were right. We did a super port start and led to the finish.”
SB20, Slam, GBR3065
Tim Saxton and team won the first race today by nearly three minutes but ended up in a wind hole in race two, and eventually finished race 6 in fifth place.
“The first race of the day was great. We had a good start, kept clear of the island shore and led from the first mark. We were threatened down the first run but managed to pull out a good lead by the finish.”
Squib, Lady Penelope, SQ819
Andy Ramsey and Malcolm Hutchings from the east coast have won the first three races.
Andy Ramsey – crew
“Today was all about the start, which turned out to be a shifty reach, which caught out several boats. It was most important to maintain clear air and then, once across the line, concentrate on the wind shifts, particularly around Shrape and Norris where it was easy to slip in to wind holes.”
Malcolm Hutchings – helmsman
“It was tricky out there today but getting it right was entirely down to good crew work and navigation. In fact, I believe the emphasis has been on good crew work for the first three days.”
