10:48 Saturday 3 Aug 2013 Sue Pelling/CWLAberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week marks a day in history with two races a day for some classes

Today marks an historic occasion at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week because, for the first time ever, there’ll be two races a day for two classes (SB20 and J/70) until Tuesday. Today also marks the start of Toe in the Water’s final year as official event charity.

The SB20 class has chosen Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2013 to host the final stage of its European Grand Slam tour which means competition is likely to full be on.

Over 30 boats are currently racing, and those spectating are likely to see Jerry Hill, winner of the SB20 class at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week last year, sporting a pink spinnaker today.

Following last year’s event, the class association decided to reintroduce the Pink Kite at this Grand Slam event, to be flown by the overall winner from the previous day’s two races.

Positive competitor feedback has also resulted in the new J/70 class sporting two races a day until Tuesday. Today’s opening race for the Newtown Trophy is likely to produce some highly competitive racing.

To celebrate Toe in the Water’s final year as official event charity, there’ll be plenty of entertainment, to help raise funds, throughout the week.

This evening’s Crew Party at Shepards Wharf is open to all and, at just £5 a ticket, it is likely to be a sell out.

Tickets are available from toeinthewater.org or by emailing info@toeinthewater.org. Also on sale on the door tonight.
