Co-owners John Raymond and Matt Alexander, and Alexander Shaw sailing Harlequin have won the Redwing class, and White Group overall.
Sailing a 2001-built boat, the team from Bembridge who are also regular Illusion keelboat sailors, finished the week with a perfect scoreline of six wins, which included a final win in today’s closing race.
The team not only clinched the class win with a 12-point margin but they won a close fought White Group battle against the east coast Squib Lady Penelope, and finished just over a point ahead.
A delighted Alexander commenting on the success of the regatta said: “It has been a fantastic week. We only lost one day to strong winds, which makes it nearly perfect as far as the weather is concerned. Our overall win has been a long time coming. We’ve been working up to this for the last five years with a couple of second places overall. We are delighted therefore to have finally won the class, and White Group overall.”
Interestingly, the winner of Black Group, the J/109, was also named Harlequin. Alexander added: “As well as being a success for Bembridge Sailing Club and the Redwing class, it has also been a successful week for the Royal Yacht Squadron with owners of both the Harlequins being members of the Royal Yacht Squadon.”
