Less than a week ago Skandia Team GBR were still engaged in battle at the Olympic Games. They concluded London 2012 with a total of five medals – one gold, and four silvers – and to celebrate their Olympic efforts most of the team are here today at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week.
Following a team press conference this morning the team, including Lucy Macgregor/Annie Lush/Kate Macgregor (Elliott 6m), Paul Goodison (Laser), Hannah Mills/Saskia Clark (470), Luke Patience/Stuart Bithell, (470), Stevie Morrison/Ben Rhodes (49er), Nick Dempsey (RS:X), Bryony Shaw (RS:X), and Alison Young (Laser Radial), began their day’s activities.
Paul Goodison enthused about being back at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week after his intense time at the Olympic Games: “It is quite strange to actually be here and not be sailing. It was so great to meet up with so many people last night in the pub, particularly with guys I have sailed with over the last three or four years. For me, Cowes is one of the most friendly places to come to and catch up, especially having been so involved in the Olympic campaign and probably not giving enough time to friends and crew. It is fantastic to be here and just be able to let my hair down. I am hoping to be back here next year, sailing.”
The activities and celebrations continue throughout the day. The best places to catch a glimpse of the team, chat to them about their Olympic experiences, and grab an autograph or photo of the sailing heroes, is on the Parade at 1400, or on the Volvo stand at Cowes Yacht Haven at 1500.
The team will then take to the water in a Best of British Parade in a motorboat where they’ll end up at Shepards Wharf for the Toe in the Water Heroes and Legends Crew Party. Here they will be able to relax, join in the fun and festival atmosphere and enjoy the grand Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week fireworks display which starts at 2130.
