Aberdeen Asset Management is delighted to announce the winner of the 2012 Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week junior art competition.
The piece of artwork from 10 year old Izzy Shepard, a member of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, successfully combined this year’s ‘Best of British’ theme with sailing at Cowes and beat all of the other Under 16 entrants from sailing clubs across the UK, securing the £1,000 prize-money from Aberdeen for her sailing club.
Izzy said: “I’m really, really pleased, it’s so exciting, I can’t believe it. I got the idea for the picture from a photo taken by my Granny years ago, which is up in our living room and which I really like.”
Gary Stocks, Club Secretary, Royal Southampton Yacht Club said: “It’s absolutely fantastic! As the competition was won by one of our cadets, we will be putting the prize money from Aberdeen Asset Management towards our training and cadet schemes.”
Entries were judged by a panel led by double Olympic gold medallist and Aberdeen Asset Management sailing ambassador Shirley Robertson, who said: “The standard of entries was fantastic and Izzy’s piece of artwork is so accomplished for someone of her age. The initiative has been a great way to encourage creativity and engage young sailors with Cowes Week.”
Izzy’s artwork has been on display all week in the Aberdeen Asset Management marquee and her and her family are enjoying a day of hospitality in the marquee today, including a boat trip to watch the racing on the Solent.
The art competition runner up is Beth Fieldsend, aged 16 and from Hill Head Sailing Club who has won an Aberdeen sailing pack and Gill sailing kit, as well as a donation of £500 to her sailing club.
There was also a prize for the best artwork by a child aged 10 years and under, which went to Jessica Case from Yarmouth Sailing Club, aged 10.
