Ladies Day, in association with the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, takes place today at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week with a firm focus on celebrating women in sailing.

First established in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and to celebrate the growing number of female competitors competing on a level playing field with men at the regatta, Ladies Day has evolved over time and is now a firm fixture at the event.

Activities ashore include the Breeze FM promotional activity on Cowes Parade with giveaways and pampering treatments throughout the day, a great discount for female shoppers with clothing partner Gill at their retail unit on Cowes Yacht Haven, plus other activities supported by the town throughout the day.

However, the main focus for the day will be on those racing. On-the-spot prizes for female sailors out racing will be awarded by event organisers courtesy of Elemis, Bainbridge International, Gill and National Boat Shows as they finish racing for the day. Celebrations will conclude with the Ladies Day reced by title sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management, which will see a collection of high profile names from the sport (as well as some from outside it) gather for the announcement of the 2013 Ladies Day Trophy winner.

The award recognises the outstanding contribution, commitment, or achievement of women in sailing and is selected by means of a nomination process which are judged by double Olympic gold medallption, hosteist Shirley Robertson OBE, Yachting World’s Elaine Bunting, Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation CEO, Sue Tibballs, Aberdeen Asset Management’s CIO Anne Richards, and the regatta’s own Sales & Marketing Director Michelle Warner.

Commenting, WSFF Chief Executive, Sue Tibballs said: “Ladies Day at Cowes is a great example of some of the best women’s sport in the country, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. We look forward to celebrating some of the best women in sailing today.”
