Quotes from a selection of winners from today’s racing

Alistair Barter, Bertie, Sonar

“We are delighted to have won today in what turned out to be more survival sailing rather than tactical, with winds up to 28 knots in the gusts. Particularly pleased after our second place yesterday for having to take a time penalty for hitting a mark.

“We had a good start and effectively led all the way round although had to do a bit of manoeuvring around a ship that came through the fleet soon after the start. I think we had the advantage today by keeping the power on by avoiding too much flogging of the sails.”

Robert Bottomley, Sailplane Bucketlust, Class 3 IRC

“Winning today was all about making sure the crew had no more than one glass of wine, and had an early night last night. We also spent much of the evening repairing the spinnaker pole we broke yesterday. Seriously though, we knew we could win today but we had to play it safe in all respects and stay out of trouble in the big winds. We saw 38kts so it was fairly exciting and truly, a terrific day on the water.”

Tom Richardson, Artic Skua, GRP Classics

“Pretty breezy out there today so we were relatively careful and kept the spinnaker in the bag for a bit longer than usual, deciding discretion the better part of valor. This is the first time the GRP Classics have raced here as a fleet and it really is fantastic racing. We’ve been having a great battle with Sheba, the other She 31 in the fleet and really enjoying sailing with my family including my son, grandson and brother Simon who built the sails.”
